The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. Non-hereditary chief of the Sauk and Fox Indians who urged his people not to resist white advances. After the Black Hawk War in 1832, the U.S. appointed Keokuk chief of the Sauks and Foxes, gave him responsibility for administering a $20,000 annuity, and awarded his supporters 400 square miles of territory on the Iowa River in Iowa.
